Ghana Health Service Opens Study Leave Applications for 2026/2027 Academic Year

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced the opening of applications for study leave with pay for the 2026/2027 academic year, offering staff the opportunity to further their education and enhance their skills to meet emerging challenges in the health sector.
In a circular dated 8th September 2025, the Service highlighted its commitment to being a learning organisation while recognising the crucial role staff play in health service delivery. According to the notice, it is essential that study leave arrangements do not negatively affect the system’s operations, particularly in light of financial and staffing constraints.
To ensure fairness, quotas have been allocated to the various regions, which will serve as a guide in selecting staff for further studies. Regional directors have been urged to work within the approved ceilings to avoid overstretching the system.
Application Process
Staff intending to pursue further studies with pay in 2025 must apply through the official online portal: https://www.ghsintention.ghsnewhrims.org.
- The online study leave portal will be open from 15th September 2025 and will close on 17th October 2025.
- After completing the online Declaration of Intention Form, applicants are required to print and submit copies to their BMC Heads for endorsement before forwarding them to the Regional Director of Health Service for processing.
- Shortlisted applicants will undergo validation by the Human Resource Directorate before the final list is published.
- Approved staff will then be required to submit their final study leave applications through the portal.
The circular, signed by Dr. Abraham Oduro, Director of Research Development, emphasised that regions must adhere strictly to the guidelines and schedules provided to ensure a smooth process.
This initiative underscores the GHS’s commitment to continuous professional development while balancing the pressing needs of healthcare delivery nationwide.
