Ghana’s Lioness of Africa, Wiyaala, has teamed up with European band The Yaga Yagas to release Segerege, a bold fusion of African storytelling and experimental sound. Inspired by songs she sang as a child under the moonlight in Funsi, the album celebrates heritage, courage, and identity.

Recorded live between Studio Metro in Ljubljana and Wiyaala’s hometown of Funsi, Segerege revives the traditional rhythms of the Sissala, Waale, and Dagaare people. It draws from “jassi” nights of drumming and dance, reflecting Wiyaala’s belief that knowing one’s roots shapes the future. “You are lost if you don’t know where you have come from,” she says.

Strengthened by The Yaga Yagas’ 2024 performances in Ghana, the collaboration features Miha Petric, Jošt Lampret, Nejc Škofic, and Žiga Kožar, with production by Janez Križaj and visuals by Slovenian artist Prof. Milan Erin.

One standout song, Scorpion, delivers a message of bravery: “Even if there is a scorpion waiting for you at home, go home and accept the sting.” It is a call to face challenges and find strength in one’s roots, and it is set for release on November 21.
